The first time I heard about affiliate marketing was about a year ago. At the time, I was searching for legit ways to make money online and while I was looking at a review about a survey site (they don’t pay as much as I’d like), here it is. A way to start your business for free.
It seemed too good to be true, to be honest. If that was true, wouldn’t everyone do it? But it was free, so I didn’t have anything to lose. That’s why I gave it a chance.
Well, here’s the catch. It’s a real business, so you have to work before you start making a full-time income.
Now that I know what it is, I know that it’s the perfect job for me, by the way.
Why It’s The Perfect Job For Me?
- I like working when I want, how I want and where I want.
- I want to have my own business.
- I want to have money in my life.
- I don’t want to depend on a boss. Why should they get to decide how much I’ll earn? Plus, if they’re an idiot, I’m not allowed to tell them, for some reason. 😛
Now, if you think that you’d like to try it, let me tell you what is affiliate marketing and how to get started.
What Is Affiliate Marketing?
Let’s say that you’re searching for a new laptop. What will you do? Probably, you’ll go to Google and search for “best laptop for x dollars” or something along these lines.
Then, you’ll click on the first 4-5 results, read some reviews, check out the prices and decide on which one you’ll get. Now, if the site you’ve read the review on, has an affiliate link for an online store (Amazon, for example), you click on it and then you buy the laptop, the site owner gets a commission.
What’s important: You won’t pay anything more than you’d pay if you went directly to the store.
That’s how affiliate marketing works; you’re just on the other side. You help people take the right decision and get a commission from the sale.
How to Get Started
Since starting affiliate marketing is free, it’s pretty easy to start. Let’s see the steps:
1. Choose A Topic
Find the topic for your blog. What do you like talking about? Mystery books, cameras, kitchen gadgets, pets?
Choose something you’re passionate about and you like talking about a lot. After all, this is your business. You’ll work on it for a long time. It should be something you enjoy!
2. Build A Site
Which is easier than it sounds especially with great platforms like WordPress. Because they do more of the work and they leave you with simple things like choosing colours and designs. 😛
3. Write Content
This is the creative part of the job. Writing quality posts that help people.
For example, let’s say the topic of your blog is dogs. You can write tips on:
- How to bathe your dog
- How to teach him tricks
- Reviews about toys
- Reviews about dog food
- Stories about your dog if you have one
A lot of people who have dogs want to learn about these. Why not help them and share your experience with them?
4. Increase Traffic
In case you haven’t noticed, there are a lot of sites out there. And most of them are older than yours – if you have one already.
So how can you help people find yours faster? (They’ll find about it eventually anyway; don’t worry!)
- Write a lot of Content
- Use Social Media to promote your blog
- Talk about it with friends and people you meet
- Advertise it (online or offline)
5. Promote Products/Services
You have found these great products or services you love and you want your readers to know as well. Then, you can write a product review and include your affiliate link. If someone clicks and gets the product/service, you get a commission out of it.
For example, this post is about Affiliate Marketing. I can tell you about the platform that taught me almost everything about affiliate marketing. If this link was an affiliate link and you joined through my link, I’d get a commission out of it.
The “secret” here is that you want to promote GOOD products. If you promote junk just to get money, then you’re not better than a scammer who just wants to rip off naive people. Do your research to make sure that your recommendation is something worthy. It’s even better if you have tried out the product so that you can have a personal opinion based on your experience and not other people’s reviews.
How Did I Start? – My Story
I had just read Tim Ferriss’s “The 4-hour work week” and I was trying to find a way to start making money online. I wanted so much to start making passive income so that I can have free time to do everything else I wanted. So I started searching online and I found that you could make money in a lot of ways. Some of them were kind of weird and sketchy, but I did find a couple of legit ones. I chose to try doing surveys.
Such a waste of time. You could spend twenty minutes to complete a survey and then be disqualified because you weren’t a valid candidate for the survey. And even if you completed the survey, the reward is next to nothing and in some cases, it’s not even money. No, I needed something else.
So I kept searching for ways to make money online and I found affiliate marketing. I never heard the word “affiliate” before in my life, but I kind of liked what the reviewer was talking about. So I checked out the training they recommended. Well, after making sure that I could join for free and I wouldn’t have to give any credit card information.
And I loved it! I’m not sure if I’d like affiliate marketing so much if I didn’t check out this platform. Besides the training, there is a huge community with people who want to help each other. I love this kind of atmosphere, so I felt like home.
That’s my short guide on how to start with affiliate marketing. If you don’t have a blog already, here are some tips for starting your blog.
