So… is Affiliate Marketing a myth?
You may have heard stories about people trying affiliate marketing and there are certainly a lot of myths around it. Everyone talks about it, but how much of it is really true?
What is Affiliate Marketing?
I’ll start with an example because it’s definitely the best way to explain it.
Let’s assume you’re looking for a laptop to buy, ok? What will you do? You’ll go online (probably on Google) to search for “best laptops in 2019 under x dollars“. You’ll check out the first 4-5 sites from the results page and you’ll see some reviews. Then, you’ll go to an online store – let’s say Amazon – and you’ll buy the laptop you decided to get.
So let’s call X the site with the review for the laptop you’ll buy. If the owner of X has a link to Amazon, you can click and go directly from X to Amazon. Now if this link is an affiliate link, the owner will make some money from the purchase you made. You won’t pay anything more, but they’ll get a commission from Amazon, because they helped you to buy an item from there.
This is affiliate marketing. You help someone make the right purchase and you get a commission. It’s similar to what real estate agents do.
Can You Make Money From Affiliate Marketing?
A lot of affiliate marketers doing this as a full-time job and it goes really well. They’ve started their own business and even though they had to work hard to make it happen, it was totally worth it. They make good money and they have every benefit that comes with a work-at-home job.
How To Make Money With Affiliate Marketing?
But how can you really start with affiliate marketing?
1. Find a Topic
First, you have to choose a topic you like. You’ll talk a lot about this topic so make sure it’s something you like talking about a lot.
The other day, I was talking with someone who just started affiliate marketing. She had a chronic disease and she decided to choose this. But after a while, she realised that she had to change to something else.
Why? Because even though she knew a lot about it and she wanted to help people about it, she really hated talking about it.
So make sure it’s something:
- You like.
- You want to talk about.
- You want to help people that have questions about it.
2. Build a Site
Don’t worry if you haven’t done this before. There are a lot of tutorials online and there are a lot of courses for affiliate marketers that can help you start. (The training I followed when I started was on the Wealthy Affiliate platform)
The most popular platform to build your website is WordPress. You don’t have to write code, so don’t get stressed. No one knew what to do when they started and we all learned along the way!
3. Write Quality Content
After you build your site, you’ll start writing content about the topic you chose. So if you chose “riding horses” as your topic, for example, you can write about:
- tips on how to ride
- appropriate equipment
Be helpful and honest, and you’ll see that you’ll get great at it!
4. Get Traffic
After writing a certain amount of posts, you’ll see that people will start visiting your site, read your advice and your recommendations. You’ll have to wait a while for it, but you can save some time by promoting your site as much as you can.
There are also certain strategies you can use to write better posts that will make search engines show your site to more people faster. The number #1 factor, though, remains the same: Write Quality Posts.
If people like what they read on your site, they’ll keep coming for more and they’ll share your content with others. Word of mouth, at its finest!
5. Earn Revenue
And the final step that will help you make money:
After starting to have visitors on your site, start applying for affiliate programs. A lot of sites that offer services or products have one, just search for the product’s name + “affiliate program” online, and you’ll see if they have one.
Have in mind that you’ll never have to pay to join a legit affiliate program. So if you find anything that asks you for payment, just say bye and move on to the next one.
What You Should Know Before Starting
But before you start, let me tell you a few things to keep in mind:
1. It Takes Time
If you’re looking for a get-rich-quick scheme, sorry, that’s not for you. Affiliate marketing takes time and work to succeed in it.
You have to realise that now, you’re building your own business. Don’t let it scare you, but you must know that it’ll take a couple of years to make serious money from it.
On the other hand, as soon as it takes off, it’ll make you money for years. So it’s up to you to decide if you want to try it, or you prefer to stay at a 9-5 job.
2. You Can Start Part-Time
Since it takes time to succeed, most people do it part-time, in the beginning. And that’s ok. It’s better to have a salary while starting it than trying to go full-time and give up in a few months because you won’t make money.
3. Write Quality Reviews
Don’t try to deceive anyone. Make sure what you recommend is the best thing you can recommend to your readers. If they understand you’re honest, they’ll trust you more and you’ll build a long-term connection with them.
4. Be Helpful
Being helpful is one of the most important traits here. Because that’s the basis for your business. You’re helping people to get the best decision and you get paid for it. Helping is your #1 mission. Don’t ever lose sight of it!
So that was the main things I had to tell you about affiliate marketing. If you’re curious about it, check out how I started with affiliate marketing.
