Not succeding is easier than it seems.
In the previous posts, we’ve seen how you can stay focused, motivated and productive when you work at home. These are the 3 most important things you should master, in my opinion, to succeed in working from home.
In the 4th and final – at least, for now – post of the series, I’ll tell you about some things to avoid when you work at home.
1. Working without Limits
Every day before starting working, decide when you’ll stop working.
This way, you’ll feel the pressure as you see the time passing by and you’ll try to finish the tasks you need to finish today. Otherwise, you may work all day and you’ll still not be able to complete them.
2. Doing Housework while Working
Don’t try to do housework while you’re supposed to be working. It gives you a false sense of achievement that you’ve done something when all you’ve done is washing the dishes. Necessary, but not much of an achievement.
Leave your chores for the end of the day.
3. Forgetting about your Body
Don’t underestimate the impact your physical state has on your workday.
Especially in the morning. After all, you need an energy boost to start your day.
I won’t even attempt to give examples here, because I have no idea what you could be allergic or intolerant to. But I can tell you for a fact, that chocolate milk is not part of a healthy breakfast.
It’d be great if you can see a nutritionist to give you exact instructions on what are the best options for you. But I’m pretty sure you won’t do it, will you?
Anyway, there are a few sites online you can check to find some healthy options for a good breakfast.
You don’t want to fall asleep in the middle of the day without a reason or to be too tired to work. And that’s very easy to do if you work at home.
So make sure you sleep enough and if possible, wake up without an alarm clock. Your body should rest as much as it needs.
Start your Day with a Cold Shower
Starting your day with a cold shower helps you to wake up and feel more energetic. Especially if the weather is pretty warm, there’s nothing better than cold water to give you a little boost.
Of course, don’t freeze yourself to death – that won’t make you feel energetic at all. 😛
Drink a lot of Water
Stay hydrated to stay in optimal condition. Drinking water has a lot of benefits, so you should do it as often as you can do.
Don’t wait until you’re thirsty. Have a glass of water beside you and drink when you see it. As a matter of fact, go and drink a glass of water now.
Go now! I’m waiting…
4. Feeling Guilty about your Breaks
It’s okay to take a break, it’s okay to take a day off and it’s okay to see your friends, see a movie or just sleep a few hours more.
Don’t feel when you’re not working. Just because you work at home, it doesn’t mean that you should work 24/7. Because you can’t no matter how much you may want to or feel like you have to.
In any case, taking a break can help you feel more motivated to work even harder. At least, it works this way for me. Every time I take a big break, I work 3 times harder without trying too much. And that’s a pace I can’t keep when I work constantly without breaks.
And what do I earn from this? I finish the work I have to do but also, I have the time to do other things, too.
5. Starting with the Easy, Brain-numbing tasks.
You want to start with the more difficult tasks of the day, the most challenging, the ones that need the most of your brainpower. You don’t want to waste the time when you’re well-rested to clean your house. That’s why I told you to leave the chores for the end of the day.
Also, if you start with the most difficult tasks, when you finish them, you feel satisfied that you’ve done something important today.
6. Saying yes to Everything
Don’t say yes to anything they ask you to do, because you’ll never have time to do what YOU need or want to do. It’s nice to do favours for people close to you but set some limits at some point.
Try to help others but think about your needs, too.
7. Stay at Home All day
One of the main cons of working at home is that you probably work alone. Loneliness is a really bad feeling and if you don’t fight it, it can take you down.
That’s why you need to make sure that you spend enough time out with friends, family, your boyfriend or girlfriend, doing other activities, etc. They’ll give you the mental boost you need to keep going.
8. Try to Remember Everything
I don’t even understand why people still try that, but I know a lot of them that forget things all the time. Why would you try to remember everything? You just can’t.
Even if you have a great memory, you’ll still forget things here and then. Isn’t it better to just write everything down?
There are a lot of planning tools you can use to write down notes. I use Trello.
9. Just Doing it
You can’t just do success. You need a plan. Yes, you’ll revise it a lot of times, but you need one. Just blindly do things, it won’t work.
You need to think where you need to start and after seeing some success, you can grow your business. Preparation is everything, so before you start, make sure to have a plan!
10. Do the Same things Over and Over again even if they’re NOT working
Just because they work for someone else, it doesn’t mean they’ll work for you, too. So if you see that things people recommend don’t work on you, just stop doing them.
- Avoid to-do lists if you see that they’re not working for you.
- Avoid working in the morning if you see it’s not working for you.
- Avoid waking up early if you see it’s not working for you.
- Avoid working 9-5 if you see it’s not working for you.
Just because everyone does it, it doesn’t mean you should!
As I said in the beginning that’s the final post in the Work at Home series. At least for now. Knowing me, though, it’s not.
Let me know what you think about this post and what else you have to add on my list. If you have any questions, I’d be happy to answer! Any suggestions are always welcome, so tell me about topics you’d like me to write.
See you next time!
