What is an infographic?
I see people asking about it so I decided to write about it. In this post, I’ll show you what is an infographic, why they are useful and how to make your own infographic for free. Ready?
What Is An Infographic?
Infographics are graphic visual representations of information. To put it simply, you convert words into images.
Why? I’ll tell you a bunch of reasons, but well… which one would you prefer to see while driving?
Why Should You Use Infographics?
I guess you chose the image on the right. But why did you? Was it because it’s easier to see the message? I think so.
1. Getting The Message Across Fast
Do you want to waste your time? No.
Then why would your readers like to spend more time than they should? They don’t. So use infographics to tell them what you want faster.
2. Infographics Are Easier To Remember
Since infographics include images, it’s easier to remember the information they provide because it’s easier to recall the images. After all, a picture is worth a thousand words, right?
3. Infographics Are Funny & Better-Looking
Plain text is just boring. To have your readers interested in what you say, you should find creative ways to make your articles more interesting. Having images and/or videos on them is one of these ways.
Infographics are not only images, but they are also part of the article itself. Isn’t that great?
4. Using Them For Promotion
Infographics are great for promoting your blog posts. So why don’t use them on Social Media?
Some platforms are exclusively for images (Instagram, Pinterest) and have millions of visitors every day. Use your infographics to link back to your articles and have more people read your content.
5. They Are Not THAT Common
Even though they’ve been around for a while, they are not used by a lot of people.
Don’t forget: Anything that can make your brand stand out in a good way, it’s great! You should try it.
Steps For Creating An Infographic
Let’s see the main steps for creating an infographic:
Write down the information you want on your infographic. Don’t have too many details on it. You want your infographic to be easy to remember.
Break the text into pieces. Usually, infographics are split into blocks or bullets, so it will be easy to decide where goes what.
2. Choose A Tool
Choose one of the tools I have below. They’re all free and easy to use and they come with a lot of tutorials online. For me, they’re all great!
If you have the time for it, try them all and keep using the one you like the most. People have different preferences, so it’s up to you which one you want to use.
3. Choose A Template
All these tools have ready templates so that they make your life easier.
Starting from scratch is never easy. It’s good to have something to start and then you see how it goes. You can change what you don’t like, after all.
4. Edit Your Infographic
And here’s my favourite part. The creative one.
Now you have all the ingredients: the script, the template and the tool. All you have to do is let your imagination go wild and make something fantastic!
Put the script on the infographic and add some graphic elements that make it look better. Any part you can convert completely into an image, do it. Any numbers you have, convert them into charts.
At the end choose colours to make it stand out – but in a good way. (Don’t overdo it with the colours and pick colours that match.)
5. Get It
You can either save your infographic and then upload it where you want (to your blog or on social media), embed it to your site or share it directly online.
Different tools give you different options, so choose one and go with it. If you have the choice to download it, I’d say go with it.
4 Free Tools To Make Your Infographic Easily
Canva is one of my favourite tools and the one I use the most. Usually, for creating images for my blog but in this case, let’s see how you can create infographics with it.
Tips For Making An Awesome Infographic
Here are some tips I can give you to make a better infographic that will amaze people:
1. Don’t Write Too Much
Think of it as a presentation. You don’t want too many words on a presentation because it starts to look like a document. The same way, you don’t want too many words on an infographic because it starts to look like an article itself.
Be concise and on the point. Even when all you want is to make a list of bullets more attractive, make it short.
Be careful with the colours you use. Here are some things to take into account when creating your infographic:
- Do not use bland colours. Using white black and grey is not that different than using just words.
- If possible, use your brand colours on your infographic. You already have them ready after all.
- Match the colours to the text. For example, if you make an infographic about the environment, use green.
- Don’t let the colours distract from the data. Use the colours in a helpful way so that people will understand easier the information.
3. Make It Readable
And last but not least: Make it easy to read. That’s the goal, after all, right?
- Use colours that contrast so that the text can be readable.
- Choose a big font size.
- Have enough white space between blocks of data.
