We all love secrets, don’t we?
So here is my list of the top 15 affiliate marketing secrets for beginners that want to be experts. Let’s start, shall we?
1. Understand the Αudience
First of all, you need to understand the audience. You need to understand what they want and why they want it.
That’s how you can find out what’s the best product for them, so you can give it to them.
2. Go for the Free Road
At least in the beginning, until you understand the audience.
Unless you have several thousands of dollars you want to spend and the expertise you need to invest them right so that you don’t lose all of it before making any money, it’s better to start the free way. Meaning SEO(Search Engine Optimisation)
Yes, it takes more time, but:
- It’s free.
- You earn with this for a long time.
- SEO gets accumulated, so future posts will get ranked without investing a lot of time in them. Because the rest of the posts rank well already.
So always optimise your blog posts for SEO. It’s something that every affiliate marketer should master anyway.
3. Aim for Quality
Quality products and quality content.
When I see the Quality vs Quantity debate, I tend to go for Quality. This case isn’t different. I’m not saying that quantity doesn’t matter, but that shouldn’t get in the way of providing a great experience.
So make sure that you provide quality content to your readers and that you recommend to them quality products/services.
4. Be Helpful
Try to be helpful and listen to your audience to find out what they’re after. Either ask them directly (through your blog or your social media) or check out forums to see what people in your niche need. The second is easier to do in the beginning when you don’t have followers.
When someone asks you a question, answer them thoroughly and give them any help you can. People will appreciate you taking the time to help them and they’ll try to return the favour.
5. Build Trust
Be as honest as possible and don’t try to scam them. First, it’s illegal, so you may have your site shut down. Second, by being honest you’ll gain your readers’ trust, which is great if you want people to come back to your site.
6. Don’t Use Too Many Ads
First, they’re annoying. Do you like seeing ads on other people’s sites?
Second, they make it harder to rank – especially in the beginning. So if you plan on getting ads to your site, at least, wait until you have some traffic.
Third, most ad companies don’t pay well, so if someone clicks on an ad instead of your affiliate link, you lose a lot of money.
Don’t rely solely on Google. It’s not very reliable, especially with all the updates every once in a while. Try to increase your authority on:
- Social Media
8. Use Social Media
Speaking of social media, start using social media to promote your blog there.
You don’t need to use all the platforms that exist. Start with a few that are a fit for your site and then expand your reach to the rest. For example, if you have a visual niche (e.g. cooking, fashion), you better start with Instagram and Pinterest.
9. Sell the Results
Sometimes, people don’t even realise that they need something and you need to show them the results to realise why they need the product or the service.
For example, I’ll start going to the gym on Monday, but if someone had told me how cool it is to get tired and sweaty for two hours a day three times a week, I wouldn’t give it a chance. But someone told me that not only I’ll lose some weight, but I’ll also get stronger, so I wanted to start. Especially since I want to start some self-defence classes in a few months, getting more fit will help me.
So if you think that it’s beneficial to your readers, sell the results. Don’t undermine the effort they have to puy, though.
10. Use the Product
If you can use the product, do it. You’ll be able to give your honest opinion – the opinion of someone who tried the product – and you’ll also be able to get some photos of the product and use these ones. Pictures that no one else has.
You can even make videos if you want!
11. Update Regularly
Before you know it, you’ll have a lot of posts that are not up to date any more. Set some time aside to review them and update them.
And even if you don’t have so old content, if you’re a beginner, you keep learning new things, so there are always more things to add to your posts, there are ways to improve them because you’ve learned a lot more stuff the last month.
12. Write a LOT
And when I say a lot, I mean a LOT.
Especially in the beginning, when it’s so difficult to rank, you need to write a lot of content so that you have more content to get ranked for. Search engines don’t think well of sites with low content, so the faster you get more content to your site, the better.
But don’t sacrifice quality because of quantity. Never forget that!
13. Fail. Fail Again. Fail Better.
That’s a phrase from a favourite book of mine and I believe strongly in it.
After each failure, you learn more. And you learn more from failure than you learn from success. So don’t get disappointed when you fall down. Just get the lessons you can and stand up. Especially if you’re a beginner, do you really expect that it’ll be that easy?
14. It Takes Time
Don’t expect to get results in a couple of months – especially if you choose the free way to do it. But that shouldn’t intimidate you; that means that only the people who are willing to work hard, only they can make it. I’m one of them and I’m sure you’re one, too!
15. Don’t Give Up
When you start, especially if you don’t have any entrepreneurs in your inner circle, most friends and family will tell you that you’re crazy for trying that, for spending time and money – if you spend money on it. Because they can’t see the bigger picture and they haven’t done any research.
But when in a few years, you have your own business, you’re financially independent and you have a better life, then they’ll probably change their mind. It’s not that they’re trying to sabotage you, they just want the best for you. But sometimes, they don’t know what’s best for you. Don’t hold this against them!
